Youngstown Thermal goes green
Staff report
YOUNGSTOWN
Youngstown Thermal’s steam service became “green” in May with the use of wood-derived biomass as a primary fuel.
Youngstown Thermal, owner and operator of the steam and chilled water distribution system in Youngstown, has used this “green and renewable” fuel source on and off for years. Now, the company located at 205 North Ave. has the infrastructure to store it permanently.
Youngstown Thermal says the switch will benefit its customers because they can add it to their green-energy portfolios. The company provides steam for heat, hot water and cooling services in more than 77 buildings in the central business district of Youngstown.
This year, Youngstown Thermal is also getting ready for the $100 million technology test program for the advanced turbine and pipe demonstration projects.
Youngstown Thermal was selected as the site for the Department of Energy and Energy Industries of Ohio project for the design, procurement, construction and testing of a prototype Advanced Ultra-SuperCritical Component – or AUSC – steam turbine and related components.
