BUTLER, PA.
The Pennsylvania State Police Butler Barracks is investigating a riot Saturday at the Mid-Atlantic Youth Services Center in Allegheny Township in Butler County.
State police were called to the facility about 5:30 p.m. because students/inmates were fighting. During the fight, several staff members were assaulted by the inmates. Four staff members and two inmates were taken to the hospital for treatment.
Once interviews are completed and the video is reviewed, charges will be filed, police said.
Troopers from the Butler, Clarion and Franklin barracks and two officers from Emlenton responded to the facility.
2 injured in crash
WEATHERSFIELD
Two people were seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash Saturday about 8:40 p.m. at the intersection of West Park Avenue and Austintown-Warren Road.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol Warren Post, a Chevrolet Blazer driven by Prescott Walters, 53, of Niles, was traveling east on West Park while a Toyota Highlander driven by Michael Hentosh, 38, of Cortland, was northbound on Austintown-Warren and failed to yield at the stop sign and struck the Blazer. The Highlander continued off the northeast corner of the intersection and hit a building.
Hentosh and a passenger were transported to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital for treatment.
The state patrol said its investigation determined Walters had been operating a vehicle while impaired. He was arrested on an active warrant and taken to Trumbull County Jail. Hentosh was cited for failure to yield. The crash remains under investigation.
Summer Day Camp
YOUNGSTOWN
The Organizacion Civica y Cultural Hispana American is accepting registrations for its Summer Day Camp for children age 5 to 11, which begins June 20 and runs through July 21. The registration deadline is June 16.
The Summer Day Camp, 3660 Shirley Road, is open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Breakfast, lunch and snacks are provided.
Campers participate in indoor activities, outdoor recreation, sports, arts and crafts, games, cultural activities and field trips. For information, call Elydia Molina at 330-781-1808, ext. 11.
Tree-essay winners
CORTLAND
The Trumbull Soil and Water Conservation District has announced the winners of its tree-essay contest.
Winners in the grades 6-8 division are Marcus Cupp of Lakeview High School, first; Elizabeth Potts of Howland Middle School, second; Misty King from Bristol, third; and Cierra Burchett of LaBrae Middle School, honorable mention.
Winners in the high-school division are Annelise Wallie, home-schooled, from Southington. first; Kelly Harrah of Newton Falls High School, second; and Kayla Somlitz of Hubbard High School, third. Honorable mention was Tessa Smith from LaBrae High School.
