Forgive the Dixie Chicks
Toledo Blade: The Dixie Chicks have been pariahs in the country music world for more than 10 years – ever since an ill-timed comment from lead singer Natalie Maines. The industry is much stronger with the Chicks than without them. It is time to welcome them back.
The trouble started for Ms. Maines and sisters Martie Maguire and Emily Robison in London on March 10, 2003 – nine days before the U.S. invaded Iraq. Ms. Maines, who has always had trouble keeping her often controversial opinions to herself, told the crowd: “We don’t want this war, this violence, and we’re ashamed that the president of the United States is from Texas.”
The Dixie Chicks will be at the Huntington Center in Toledo on Sept. 23. Luke Bryan sold out his recent Toledo concert in less than 30 seconds. Fifteen years ago, maybe the Chicks would have done the same. However, there are still plenty of good seats available. It is clear that this country-loving town has not completely forgiven the former darlings of Nashville.
Sadly, it is a rare occurrence to hear one of their many enriching hits on today’s radio. That is a huge mistake.
