The Boardman bands put on their spring concert on May 3 at the Boardman Performing Arts Center.

The concert and symphonic bands, and the Wind Ensemble of Boardman High School, performed their annual spring concert with a special tribute this year. Band director Steven Chambers is retiring after 34 years as a music director, with 32 of those years as an active part of the Boardman Band Program. This concert is the last for Chambers.

“We are kind of overwhelmed at this time of the year how students are just absorbing everything that we’re dishing out and applying it and getting these kinds of results,” said Thomas Ruggieri, the Director of Bands.

The concert and symphonic combined band opened the performance with the song “Crossfire” by Gary Gilroy. The band played four songs before finishing their set and allowing the Wind Endsemble to take the stage.

The Wind Ensemble performed five songs, the third one with a special solo by senior Michael Mitchum. Mitchum plays the trumpet and is the section leader of the trumpets in marching band, the principal chair in the Symphany Orchestra, third chair in Wind Ensemble, lead trombone player in Jazz Ensemble 2 and lead trumpet player in Jazz Ensemble 1.

The tribute to Chambers was given prior to the closing song. Students, faculty and parents of the Boardman band members have appreciated everything Chambers has done for the band and enjoyed his final concert.

The Boardman Band Program has several more concerts and events coming up as the school year comes to an end.
