Students at Robinwood Lane Elementary collected and brought in cans to the school from May 2-13.
The idea for the can drive came from when the Green Team visited for Earth Day and gave the students a lesson on recycling.
Student teacher Brogan Todd noticed how much fun the students had with the Green Team and came up with the idea for the Cash for Cans fundraiser.
“For our community project, I thought let’s just do something to donate back to Robinwood because they’ve done so much for me,” said Todd.
The class that brings in the most cans gets a pizza party. For every pound of cans, the students got 38 cents.
At the end of the two weeks, more than 18,000 cans were brought in and the students received $200 for it. All of the money received from the cans went back to Robinwood to use however it wants.
“At first it was just kindergarten, but then the whole school got involved. They had done wonderful,” said Todd.
