Warren man found not guilty by reason of insanity
WARREN — A judge has found that Patrick L. Heltzel, 23, of Atlantic Street not guilty by reason of insanity in the April 2013 murder of Milton Grumbling III, 71, of Kincaid East Road in Warren Township.
Judge Andrew Logan of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court, who presided over Heltzel's murder trial last week without a jury, read a lengthy judgment entry but will hold a hearing June 7 to determine what happens to Heltzel next.
Court testimony indicated that Grumbling was stabbed to death. Bones in his face were fractured, and his dentures were broken, according to 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner.
Grumbling was known for helping troubled youth.
Patrick’s mother, Janet Dyer testified that Patrick has a history of depression and mental health problems. She said he had been expelled from school and had been admitted to a hospital three months before Grumbling’s death.
