Saban wants commish, blasts Jim Harbaugh
DESTIN, FLA.
Alabama coach Nick Saban wants a college football commissioner.
Speaking at the Southeastern Conference annual meetings Tuesday, Saban said satellite camps are “bad for college football” and added “there needs to be somebody that looks out for what’s best for the game, not what’s best for the Big Ten or what’s best for the SEC or what’s best for Jim Harbaugh, but what’s best for the game of college football — the integrity of the game, the coaches, the players and the people that play it. That’s bigger than all of this.”
Saban says each of the Power Five conferences continue to politick for what they want, often creating the kind of chaos that surrounded satellite camps earlier this year.
Michigan QB pleads guilty to misdemeanor
ANN ARBOR, MICH.
Michigan quarterback Alex Malzone has admitted responsibility to a disorderly conduct charge stemming from late April.
Malzone’s plea came Tuesday, according to 15th Judicial District records in Michigan, and he was ordered to pay $175 in fines and costs. He also faced a misdemeanor altered-driver-license charge, but there was no plea listed for that one. That alleged offense occurred April 26, the same date as the disorderly conduct.
Malzone signed with Michigan before last season but did not play at all for the Wolverines in 2015.
A message was left for a defense attorney listed for Malzone.
Texas Tech athlete admits to stealing guns
LUBBOCK, TEXAS
An arrest affidavit says a Texas Tech football player who was kicked off the team earlier this month stole at least seven guns after burglarizing a home in December.
The affidavit says Robert James Castaneda told investigators he broke into the Lubbock home on Dec. 20 and took a safe with seven weapons.
Investigators say they were led to Castaneda after one of the stolen weapons was found in a pawnshop.
Castaneda is free on bond after being arrested Friday on a charge of burglary of a habitation. A phone number listed for Castaneda was disconnected, and court records don’t list an attorney for him.
Lubbock police are investigating the possible involvement of two other people.
Wrestler gives up on Olympics after brawl
MOSCOW
A two-time wrestling world champion says he is giving up his place at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro after a brawl marred a Russian qualifying tournament.
Viktor Lebedev was competing against Ismail Musukayev in a semifinal bout at the Russian nationals on Friday when Musukayev was angered by refereeing calls against him and shoved Lebedev.
Musukayev’s supporters and coaches charged into the ring, prompting a scuffle that was broken up by riot police. Wrestlers from Musukayev’s home region of Dagestan then boycotted the tournament in protest at the standard of refereeing, causing a nationwide scandal.
Lebedev told a local news outlet that he is withdrawing from the Olympic team as “a matter of honor” because he feels the referees gave him favorable calls in front of his home crowd.
