GM Lordstown plants for pollinators

LORDSTOWN

General Motors Lords-town is partnering with Pollinator Partnership to establish a pollinator garden at the assembly complex as part of the Monarch Wings Across Ohio program.

The garden will be planted with native Ohio flowering plants, milkweed and grasses to promote Monarchs, local honey bees and other beneficial pollinators. For at least three years, a Pollinator Partnership researcher will be visiting the garden to collect data on the plants Monarchs prefer in order to establish tested Monarch planting field guides for corporate land managers.

The GM Lordstown environmental department, Lordstown Boy Scout Troop 4020 and Enviroscapes Landscaping will be participating in a planting event with GM employees today to recognize Global Environmental Day.

3 organizations give to local fund

WARREN

The Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley, Trumbull 100 and The Youngstown Foundation on Tuesday announced a joint commitment of $100,000 over three years to the Fund for Our Economic Future, an alliance of funders dedicated to advancing both economic growth and increased access to opportunity for all residents of Northeast Ohio. Each organization will provide one-third of the total commitment for a shared voting membership in the fund.

These funders join The Raymond John Wean Foundation, which renewed its fund membership in March with a $100,000 commitment over three years.

Police agencies reward officers for showing restraint

PHILADELPHIA

A few police agencies in the U.S. have begun rewarding officers for showing restraint in the line of duty, putting the tactic on par with bravery.

More than 40 Philadelphia officers have received awards since December for defusing conflicts without shooting, clubbing or otherwise using maximum force against anyone. The Los Angeles Police Department recently created a Preservation of Life award. And later this year, the U.S. Justice Department’s new Community Policing Awards will recognize officers who prevent tense situations from spinning out of control.
