Day out with Daddy today at Arlington

YOUNGSTOWN

The city, Youngstown Metropolitan Housing Authority, Youngstown Community Initiative to Reduce Violence and United Healthcare Community Plan will host a Day Out with Daddy Party from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. today at Arlington Heights Recreation Center, 801 Park Ave.

Fathers, uncles, grandfathers, father figures, male role models and male mentors are urged to attend the event with their Youngstown-area children.

The event includes activities, prizes, rewards and health and wellness information. Lunch and beverages will be provided. The event is free and open to the public. UnitedHealthcare Community Plan members can get free transportation to and from the event by calling 1-800-269-4190.

Hubbard jewelry theft

HUBBARD

Hubbard police are searching for a suspect they say robbed a jewelry store on North Main Street.

According to 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner, police said someone smashed the front door to Village Goldsmith, 48 N. Main St., and took $2,000 worth of watches Thursday night.

Evidence from the scene was collected and the incident is under investigation.

School giveaway set at Covelli Centre

YOUNGSTOWN

Heart Reach Ministries has teamed with Now Youngstown, the city and the Community Initiative to Reduce Violence to offer a back to school celebration from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 13 at the Covelli Centre, 229 E. Front St.

There will be a free bookbag giveaway for 3,000 students, while supplies last. Registration begins at 10 a.m. Students must be present and accompanied by a parent or guardian. For information, call 330-744-2000.

The event will also include a bounce house, pop-up basketball, games, face-painting, hot dogs, snow cones, popcorn, music, school information and more.

Donations are being accepted for the giveaway. Donations of food, snacks, drinks, gifts or prizes, and volunteers for the event are also needed. Make checks payable to Heart Reach Ministries, P.O. Box 778, Youngstown 44501. All donations are tax-deductible.

Flood management

LOWELLVILLE

Representatives from non-profit organizations, and local and county government will meet from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 12 at Lowellville High School, 52 Rocket Place, to discuss flood management throughout Mahoning County. Presentations to inform the public are set for 1:30 to 5:30 p.m.

National Night Out in New Middletown

NEW MIDDLETOWN

New Middletown is celebrating National Night Out Tuesday in Welker Park.

National Night Out is a crime-prevention initiative geared toward bringing neighbors and police together in a family fun-filled event.

The parade will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Springfield High School and go to St. Paul’s, with the party starting at 7 p.m. behind the municipal building. Activities will include bounce houses, dunk tanks, a DJ, Cleveland Metro Life Flight landing at 7:45 p.m., entertainment, giveaways, and a fireworks display at 10 p.m. Food, soft drinks and cotton candy are free.

National Night Out is sponsored by New Middletown Village in association with Aqua Water Service.

Pregnant woman says man assaulted her

STRUTHERS

A Struthers man was arraigned Friday in Struthers Municipal Court after a pregnant woman reported he assaulted her at a Creed Street home.

Officers booked Michael Cochran, 29, into the Mahoning County jail Thursday on a domestic violence charge.

The 24-year-old woman who is eight months pregnant told police Thursday that Cochran tripped her Wednesday during an argument and punched her repeatedly in the stomach.

Discolored water

LEETONIA

Due to an emergency water shut down of a main water line on Friday, water customers in Leetonia may experience discolored water, low water volume and low pressure. Anyone affected by the complete shut down of water will be under a boil order until further notice.

Kids reading event at farmers market

WARREN

Bookworms of Warren, in partnership with Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership, Warren City Schools, the Warren-Trumbull Public Library, and the Fine Arts Council of Trumbull County, is hosting a literacy event from 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesday during the Warren Farmers Market on Courthouse Square.

The event, which includes fun activities based around literacy, writing, and creativity as part of the Bookworms of Warren’s community-based book project, kicks off with a live painting to poetry by local artist James Shuttic. The Warren Public Library staff is reading several children’s books and doing a “seed bomb” activity, and there is music by DJ Dr. D. Johnson, poetry readings every half hour, and a Poems to Pavement children’s chalk activity.

Youth volunteers

CANFIELD

On Saturday, the Canfield Little Cardinals football players and cheerleaders, along with their coaches and board members, will be volunteering their time and energy to help beautify an area of Canfield Fairgrounds. They will pull weeds, plant shrubs and flowers and mulch a central area in need of sprucing up.

School supplies for Austintown students

AUSTINTOWN

The Carousel Center, 80 Westchester Drive, will be handing out donated school supplies to Austintown families in need at 9:30 a.m. Aug. 12.

There will be supply tables for each grade according to the school’s supply lists for grades kindergarten through 5.

Children must be present ,and the event will end when supplies are gone.
