The Boardman Community Baseball 10-yr-old All-Star team defeated Loveland Little League, 6-5, on Friday in the 9-10-yr-old State Tournament.

Boardman, the Ohio District II Champion, will face Dover Little League ,the OH District 4 Champion, today at 1 p.m. in the state tournament championship game.

Boardman is 5-1 in state tournament play.

Meshel to be honored at California Palms

AUSTINTOWN

Former State Sen. Harry Meshel will be honored during the Sept. 17 outdoors amateur boxing show at California Palms.

Lights Out management and Sebastiani Trucking are co-sponsoring the show.

The Ohio State-Oklahoma football game will be shown on 20-foot screens.

Tables are available for $400 and $300. Tickets cost $25 and $15.

Paintball injury sidelines Cowboy

OXNARD, Calif.

Damien Wilson can be added to the list of freak accidents in the offseason for the Dallas Cowboys after the second-year linebacker injured an eye in a paintball accident.

Executive vice president of personnel Stephen Jones said Friday the incident happened about a week before the Cowboys reported for training camp in California.

Wilson is joined on the non-football injury list by running back Darren McFadden, who broke his right elbow during Memorial Day weekend trying to save his cellphone when he dropped it.

Jones declined to comment on details of Wilson’s injury, but did say there wasn’t much concern over serious complications for the 23-year-old.

The first practice for the Cowboys is Saturday.

Lee maintains lead at British Open

Mirim Lee followed her opening 10-under 62 with a 71 in the Women’s British Open, leaving her a stroke ahead entering the weekend at tree-lined Woburn Golf Club.

A day after matching the tournament record and falling a stroke short of the major championship mark, the 25-year-old South Korean player had three birdies and two bogeys to reach 11-under 133.

Lee had two front-nine birdies, bogeyed the par-4 13th, birdied the par-5 15th and bogeyed the par-3 17th on the Marquess Course, the hilly, forest layout that is a big change from the seaside links that dominate the tournament rotation.

Three weeks ago at the U.S. Women’s Open, Lee opened with a 64, then followed with rounds of 74, 76 and 73 to tie for 11th. The two-time LPGA Tour winner missed the cut in the ANA Inspiration to start the major year, and tied for fourth in the KPMG Women’s PGA.

Thailand’s Ariya Jutanugarn and China’s Shanshan Feng were tied for second. Jutanugarn had a 69, and Feng had a 68. Jutanugarn won three straight events in May.

South Korea’s Ha Na Jang (67) and 46-year-old Scot Catriona Matthew (65) were 9 under.

Djokovic, Monfils advance in Toronto

Milos Raonic couldn’t hide his disappointment.

The fourth-seeded Canadian used the word repeatedly when answering questions after a 6-4, 6-4 loss to France’s Gael Monfils on Friday night in the Rogers Cup quarterfinals.

“Disappointment is the right word,” Raonic said. “In tennis, unless you’re the guy winning the tournaments most of the weeks, which there’s very few guys that are doing that, you’re losing quite a bit. So it’s very important to make the most of those, try to learn, try to be better from those situations. That’s my next objective.”

The 10th-seeded Monfils will face top-ranked Novak Djokovic today at York University’s Aviva Centre. Djokovic beat fifth-seeded Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic 7-6 (6), 6-4.
