Plane crashes on state Route 82
BRACEVILLE
An ultra-light motor-propelled aircraft crashed at about 8:30 p.m. Thursday along the 3000 block of state Route 82 near Benedict Road in Braceville Township. According to the Trumbull County 911 Center, the person operating the plane sustained a cut on his arm. It was not immediately known what caused the crash or if there were other injuries. The Braceville Police Department is investigating.
Free backpacks, supplies for kids

TCC, a Verizon Wireless retailer, will celebrate its fourth annual National Backpack Giveaway Campaign by handing out 250 backpacks containing school supplies to children from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday.
The store, 5507 Mahoning Ave., will be closed for business and open for free backpack pickup, face-painting and other activities.
Anyone picking up a backpack must have a child with them, said Lyndsey Simms, TCC store manager.
TCC makes donations to various community organizations dedicated to helping others. People can make a donation by visiting the store.

Food for veterans

Veterans Outreach is one of 18 nonprofit organizations in Ohio that received a grant Thursday from Walmart Foundation.
An area Walmart representative presented a check to the organization for $35,000 to support its “Serve Veterans NOW” initiative that provides meals to veterans in the area who are dealing with food insecurity.
The grants totaled $840,000 to celebrate a “Day of Giving to Fight Hunger.” The grants came from the Foundation’s State Giving Council. Walmart’s “Day of Giving” featured presentations in Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton, Massillon, Perrysburg, Youngstown and West Chester.

Officers arrested a Cortland man after finding multiple drugs on a passenger during a traffic stop.
According to the police report, officers pulled over Dylan Brammer, 18, of Cadwallader-Sonk Road, on Laurie Drive for an object hanging from his rearview mirror Wednesday night. Officers found two plastic bags of suspectedmarijuana on him.
Officers also found pills suspected to be alprazolam (Xanax) and five different items containing suspected marijuana on Brammer’s passenger Mitchell Franco, 18, of Timber Creek Drive, reports said.
Brammer was issued a criminal summons for possession of drugs for the marijuana, and Franco was charged with possession of drugs for possession of a controlled substance.

The residents of Beeghly Oaks Center for Rehabilitation and Healing, 6505 Market St., will have an artist reception honoring 30 outstanding talented from 5:30 to 8 p.m. today. Awards will be presented from 6:30 to 7 p.m. Residents, employees, family members and the outside community exhibit the spirit of creativity in nearly 200 art pieces on display at the center.
