LOWELLVILLE

The public is invited to join pharmacists, lawyers, Mahoning County Common Pleas Judge Jack Durkin and Deputy Mahoning County Coroner Dr. Joseph Ohr in a discussion at 7 p.m. today about the legal role of pharmacy in preventing diversion of drugs to combat the opioid epidemic.

The meeting at RC Outsourcing, 102 E. Water St., Lowellville, is taking place to give Judge Durkin ideas, suggestions and solutions to the opioid epidemic to take with him as a representative of Ohio at a regional opioid conference Aug. 24-26 in Cincinnati, said Pharmacist Raymond R. Carlson, owner of RC Compounding Services, LLC in Poland.

Judge Durkin was asked by Ohio Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor to be a delegate to the opioid conference.

Beating, theft of gun reported on South Side

YOUNGSTOWN

A man forced his way inside a home on the South Side late Tuesday, beat a woman and took her 9mm handgun, reports said.

Police were called about 11:30 p.m. to a home in the 500 block of West Boston Avenue, where reports said the man was enraged because a car he did not recognize was parked in the victim’s driveway.

The victim and the suspect used to date, reports said.

The man took an air conditioner out of the window to get inside, reports said. He ran out of the house after attacking her and into a waiting car. The victim noticed the gun missing after the attack, reports said.

Niles woman robbed at gunpoint in Warren

WARREN

A Niles woman, 40, reported being robbed at gunpoint at 4 a.m. Wednesday by a man while she was standing outside of a home in the 300 block of Scott Street Northeast with another female.

Two males on bicycles started talking to them, then one of them pulled out a handgun and demanded her purse, which she gave to him, and he rode away. The other male grabbed the other female by the throat, took money from her pocket and bra and fled with the other male. The second female left before police arrived.

Warren council OKs $1.6M for sewer study

WARREN

City council approved legislation Wednesday approving a $1.6 million study of all of the city’s sewage and storm-sewer lines.

The study is likely to show that the city needs $30 million to $40 million in improvements to alleviate flooding in basements and eliminate a sewage line that allows sewage overflow from rainwater to empty into the Mahoning River, Ed Haller, Warren water pollution control director, told The Vindicator in an interview.

Hubbard advisory lifted

The precautionary boil advisory in Hubbard has been lifted upon receiving laboratory results indicating that the water is safe to resume normal usage, according to the mayor’s office.

Dog-shelter event set

The Fowler Open Air Market will host its first pet expo and adopt-a-thon from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at 3385 Youngstown Kingsville Road in Cortland. More than 30 vendors will sell products. Local animal rescues Pawz 2 Adopt and Alchemy Acres will have pets available for adoption. Additionally, organizations including Nitro’s Ohio Army, the Animal Welfare League of Trumbull County and the Trumbull County Animal Cruelty Task Force will provide information. The event includes a pet-themed “sip n’ paint” activity beginning at noon.

Man faces many charges

A Euclid man faces five charges after a domestic dispute was reported on Glenwood Avenue.

According to police reports, Everett Dalton, 35, had a disagreement Tuesday night with the victim about how long he should stay at her home.

Dalton damaged the victim’s property when told to leave the residence, according to police.

Dalton is charged with criminal trespassing, resisting arrest, assault, criminal damaging and obstructing official business. Police took him to the Mahoning County jail, pending an appearance in area court here today.

OVI charge for woman

A Youngstown woman faces a charge of operating a vehicle while impaired in an incident reported Tuesday afternoon at a Residence Inn on Tiffany South Boulevard.

Amber Johnson, 30, of Wellington Avenue, reportedly hit a parked car in the hotel’s parking lot. When police arrived, they said they noticed slowed speech and unsteady walking. Officers conducted a sobriety field test, which she failed. She was arrested on the OVI charge and brought to the department for testing her blood-alcohol content.

ROTC picnic reunion

The Youngstown State University Army Reserve Officer’ Training Corps’ summer picnic reunion is from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday at Boardman Park Chester Long Pavilion, 375 Boardman Poland Road.

Health proposals sought

The Ohio Commission on Minority Health has rereleased the request for proposals for Minority Health Month 2017. The deadline for submission is 5 p.m. Aug. 26.

ACTION fundraiser at Bob Evans eatery

Elder Rose Carter, executive director/lead organizer of the Alliance for Congregational Transformation Influencing Our Neighborhoods, asked the community to help its Dress to Succeed prison ministry by dining at Bob Evans Restaurant, 3818 Belmont Ave., from 6 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. every Monday in August beginning Monday.

Bob Evans on Belmont will donate 15 percent of sales to customers who present an ACTION flier, which are available on ACTION of Youngstown’s Facebook where the flier can be downloaded. Customers can also show a picture of the flier on their smartphones.

Leetonia bridge closing

LEETONIA

The bridge on state Route 344 by the Shell Station and Dairy Queen will be closed for 60 days starting Monday to allow for the replacement of the bridge.

Traffic must follow the marked detours. The state will also have signs up for through truck traffic to follow before entering Leetonia. This is an Ohio Department of Transportation project.
