The 41st Toronto International Film Festival runs from Sept. 8 to 18 and is considered a launching pad to the Hollywood awards season. The TIFF on Tuesday announced some of the high-profile films that it will premiere this year. They include:

v “The Magnificent Seven”: A remake of the famed Western, directed by Antoine Fuqua, starring Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt.

v “Arrival”: Sci-fi film about an alien invasion, directed by Denis Villeneuve and starring Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner.

v “Deepwater Horizon”: Set on the offshore drilling rig that exploded in 2010, creating the world’s worst oil spill, it is directed by Peter Berg and stars Mark Wahlberg.

v “The Birth of a Nation”: Tale of a slave uprising in the old South, directed by Nate Parker and starring Parker and Armie Hammer.

v “The Edge of Seventeen”: High school drama directed by Kelly Fremon and starring Hailee Steinfeld.

“Wayward Pines” (9 p.m., Fox): Season 2 of “Wayward Pines” comes to a creepy close as the mutant creatures known as Abbies descend upon the town. This forces Theo (Jason Patric) to make a decision that could impact all of humanity.

Beatitude House photo exhibition

YOUNGSTOWN

Beatitude House has partnered with the Butler Institute of American Art in creating a juried exhibition of works by local photographers that will be displayed at the Butler’s Trumbull and main branches from Oct. 16 to Nov. 13.

Juror is Louis Zona, director and chief curator of the Butler. The exhibition will commemorate Beatitude House’s 25th anniversary.

The exhibit is open to photographers living within 50 miles of any Beatitude House site. Categories are Professional, Amateur (18 years old and older unpaid hobbyists), and Youth (18 years old or younger enrolled in local school or university).

The photographs must convey the theme of Beatitude House’s mission statement and 16 will be selected for the exhibition. For more information, go to beatitudehouse.com/events. Deadline to submit photos is Aug. 1.

Beatitude House serves disadvantaged women and children by creating homes, providing educational opportunities and fostering healthy families.

Vic youth theater presents ‘Alice’

YOUNGSTOWN

The Victorian Players Ventures in Youth Theatre will present “Alice@Wonderland,” an adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s original story, at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday. The theater is at 702 Mahoning Ave. Director is Nick Mulichak.

Tickets are $10 ($5 for senior citizens and children 12 and under). Call 330-746-5455 for reservations.

The play is about a 21st century Alice (played by Elainie Huncik), who finds herself tumbling down the rabbit hole and into madness, where she meets a host of characters from the classic story.

The cast also includes Zon Green, Carter Monroe, Trudy Mason, Selena Phillips, D’Ella Heschmeyer and Lindie Schwarten.
