The registration deadline is Aug. 12 for an 11-week training course for state-tested nursing assistants (STNA) offered by Mercy College of Ohio and Eastern Gateway Community College.

Training is from 5 to 8:15 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, Sept. 6 through Nov. 17, at Mercy College Youngstown, 932 Belmont Ave. Clinical training is at The Assumption Village, 9800 Market St., North Lima.

For those who meet eligibility and hiring criteria for employment, Mercy Health will pay the tuition if students pass the course and the certification examination, accept an available STNA or HCA job opening with Mercy Health, and make a commitment to stay in the position for a minimum of 12 months. If the requirements are not met, students have to pay the cost of the class.

Those who finish the course will earn five hours of college credit at Eastern Gateway Community College.

Weight-management program offered

Mercy Health — Youngstown is offering SlimDown, a six-week weight-management program, beginning Aug. 16 at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, 1044 Belmont Ave. Classes run from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays through Sept. 20.

SlimDown teaches participants to manage their weight by making lifestyle changes with regard to food, physical activity and behavior. The cost is $40. Parking is free. Safe Sitter registration

YOUNGSTOWN

Mercy Health — Youngstown is accepting registrations for a Safe Sitter program Aug. 16 and 17 at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital. Classes are from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.

Safe Sitter teaches boys and girls, 11 to 13, basic first aid, rescue breathing, accident prevention, child-care tips, what to do if a child chokes and how and when to call for help.

The cost $28.50. Scholarships are available for those who meet financial eligibility requirements. For information or to register, call 330-480-3070.

Discussion about breast condition

Mercy Health — Youngstown general surgeon, Dr. Nancy Gantt, M.D., FACS, who specializes in breast disease, will talk about dense breasts and what the condition means for women during the next meeting of Joanie’s Sisters in Support Sorority. Doris Bullock, a certified personal trainer, will lead the group in stretching and relaxation activities.

The meeting is from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 17 at the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center, 1044 Belmont Ave.

Dental health program

Salem Public Library’s Wellness Wednesday program, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 10 in the library’s Quaker Room at 821 E. State St., features “General Dental Health,” which focuses on information to benefit health presented by representatives of Salem dentist Dr. Paul Shivers.
