Boardman trustees consider levy renewals for November ballot

BOARDMAN

Trustees set the groundwork Monday for placing two five-year renewal levies before residents on the November ballot.

If approved by voters in November, renewal of a 0.7-mill levy would generate about $260,000 a year. Renewal of a 3-mill levy would generate about $1.3-mill a year. Both taxes benefit the general fund.

Township officials said they did not have an estimate of how much each levy would cost the owner of an $100,000 home, as they still are waiting for certification from the Mahoning County Auditor’s office.

Trustees characterized the measures as operating levies. They stressed they are renewals, not new taxes.

A resolution to send the levy questions to the county elections board for placement on the fall ballot will come up for final passage at the trustees’ next regular meeting Aug. 8.

In other business, trustees reduced the speed limit on Maple Avenue from 35 to 25 miles per hour. Homeowners, concerned about safety, petitioned the township for the reduction.

The change will take effect once the township posts new signs, which officials estimated could take two to three weeks.
