St. James Day

BOARDMAN

The congregation of St. James Episcopal Church, 7640 Glenwood Ave., will celebrate St. James Day at 10 a.m. Sunday at its former home, St. James Meeting House, 375 Boardman- Poland Road.

St. James was the first of the apostles to suffer martyrdom.

Episcopal Christians in the Connecticut Western Reserve began meeting for worship in homes in the early 1800s, making St. James’ the oldest congregation in the Episcopal Diocese of Ohio. In 1829, Bishop Philander Chase, first bishop of Ohio and the founder of Kenyon College, consecrated the first St. James’ Episcopal Church building, where the congregation worshipped until 1971.

The building was de-consecrated and relocated to Boardman Park and renamed St. James’ Meeting House.

In 1979, it was entered in the National Register of Historic Places by the Heritage Conservation and Recreation Service, U.S. Department of the Interior, and is the only building or site in Boardman Township to be so designated.

In 1972, a new church building on Glenwood Avenue was completed, where worship is at 10 a.m. Sundays.

The Rev. Shawn Dickerson is parish priest.
