With temperatures expected to top 90 degrees over the weekend, the city is opening the Arlington Heights Recreation Center from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday to offer residents relief from the heat.
The center at 903 Otis St. will be open regular hours today from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Woman: I took heroin
YOUNGSTOWN
Police reports say a woman found about 8:10 p.m. Wednesday behind the wheel of a car on the South Side told officers she had taken heroin just before she passed out.
Police were called to the intersection of East Indianola Avenue and Cooper Street. They found a car that had its bumper resting against a utility pole, and found a needle next to the foot of the driver, Jennifer Mills, 33, of Ridgeway Avenue.
Mills was having trouble staying awake, and was sweating and shaking. She told police she had just taken heroin, reports said. Inside the car police found two spoons and two more needles.
Mills faces charges of possession of drug-abuse instruments and possession of drug paraphernalia.
2 argue; shot is fired

A woman in the 300 block of East Boston Avenue told police a man she was arguing with about 9:15 p.m. Wednesday fired a shot at her but missed.
The 18-year-old woman told officers she was arguing with a man who punched and choked her and took her cellphone. The woman ran outside, and the man got in a car and fired a shot as he was inside while driving away.
Phone lines are cut

A township man faces multiple charges after cutting phone lines during a domestic-violence incident at a Terraview Drive residence Wednesday.
John Steele, 69, is charged with two counts of domestic violence and disrupting public service. Police arrested Steele on York Avenue at a traffic stop at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. The victim reported Steele knocked down her bedroom door and threatened her life. The victim grabbed a land-line phone to call for help but realized it had no dial tone and used her cellphone. Police later discovered the land lines were cut in the basement.
Burglary sentence
YOUNGSTOWN
A Columbiana County man was sentenced in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court on Thursday to four years in prison for a February burglary in Beaver Township. The sentence handed down to Jason Heffner, 36, of Madison Township, by Judge Shirley J. Christian will run concurrent to an expected 10-year sentence he will receive next week in Columbiana County Common Pleas Court for a string of burglaries in that county.
