Attorney jailed for 5 days for wearing Black Lives Matter button in Youngstown courtroom

YOUNGSTOWN — An attorney in municipal court was sentenced to five days in jail today for contempt of court after refusing to remove a Black Lives Matter button she was wearing in the courtroom.

Atty. Andrea Burton was handcuffed by a bailiff after she refused the order to remove the button by Judge Robert Milich as she was representing a client in a pretrial hearing.

Atty. Burton is awaiting transportation to the Mahoning County jail.

The order came after Judge Milich recessed the court and asked Atty. Burton to step in his chambers with him.

When they came out of chambers, he called the case Atty. Burton was working on. He then asked her to remove the button. When she refused, she was ordered to be handcuffed.
