Wanted to go to jail

Reports said a homeless man broke the window in the front door of the police department Tuesday evening so he could go to jail.

Reports said Clifton Jennings, 53, came to the police department, 116 W. Boardman St. at about 8:45 p.m. and told officers he wanted to go to jail. He told police he broke a window at a nearby church, and that he wanted to break more windows. Reports said he walked out of the lobby, then threw a rock through the glass in the door and broke it. He was taken to the Mahoning County jail on a felony charge of vandalism.

Robbery, kidnapping

Township police are investigating a robbery and kidnapping at True North Shell gas station at 4 a.m. Wednesday. The station clerk reported a man robbed the store on Market Street at Indianola Road at gunpoint and took about $280. After taking the money, the suspect ordered the victim to leave the store with him. The suspect walked the victim onto Indianola and ordered him to hide behind a nearby house. The incident was recorded by the store’s camera surveillance.

Wellness Walk

The next meeting of the African American Wellness Committee, which is finalizing plans for the fourth annual African-American Male Wellness Walk Initiative of the Mahoning Valley on Aug. 20, will take place at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the W.J. Cobbins Office Tower Building, 1350 Fifth Ave., in the Rose Room.

Bike, car fest set

Wedgewood Pizza of Boardman, 6200 South Ave., will host a public bike and car fest at 1 p.m. Sunday. Several raffles will be offered, including a 50-50 and a chance to win Wedgewood Pizza for a year. There will be prizes, giveaways and entertainment, and all proceeds will benefit United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley.

Circus comes to town

The Harry Lees American Legion Post 506 and Auxiliary is bringing in the Kelly Miller Circus at 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the old Badger High School grounds, 8300 Main St. The public is invited to watch the animals being unloaded and fed, and witness the raising of the giant big top at about 9 a.m. Cheaper advance sales tickets are available at area businesses and online at ww.KellyMillerCircus.com. Road to be closed

The Trumbull County Engineer’s Office said Bristol Champion Townline Road between Corey Hunt Road and Downs North Road in Bristol and Champion townships will be closed for a culvert replacement from Monday through Aug. 12. The recommended detour is south on Oak Hill Drive, east on state Route 305 and north on North Park Avenue.

I-80 crash

LIBERTY

A spokesman for the Ohio Department of Transportation said both lanes of Interstate 80 eastbound in Liberty opened Wednesday night after a one-vehicle crash just before 2 p.m. , slightly east of Belmont Avenue (state Route 193) in which a truck overturned. No injuries were reported, but officials said debris on the highway backed up traffic to the Mahoning County line, reported 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner.
