Teen picked up by police for allegedly stealing from Mahoning County treasurer

CAMPBELL — Officers arrested a teenager wanted for stealing checks from the Mahoning County Treasurer’s Office Wednesday evening.

Campbell police responded to Monroe Avenue about 9:40 p.m. after a resident reported that Kyheem Underwood, 19, of Youngstown was in the area.

Officers reported that Underwood, who was sitting in front of an apartment, began to run when he saw police.

A police report states Underwood continued to run after police told him to stop, but that he eventually said he “gives up” and sank to his knees with his hands in the air. Officers booked Underwood into the Campbell jail Wednesday.

Underwood is alleged to have stolen checks from the treasurer’s office while he was a part-time seasonal worker in 2015.

Though he worked in the treasurer’s office, Underwood was an employee of the Mahoning-Columbiana Training Association rather than the county, according to the treasurer.

Treasurer’s office officials say Underwood’s job included opening and sorting mail and that he stole some of the checks sent to the office.

A Mahoning County grand jury indicted Underwood last month on charges of theft, theft in office, receiving stolen property and forgery. The June indictment was Underwood’s third indictment related to his job at the treasurer’s office.

Underwood now faces misdemeanor charges of obstructing official business and criminal trespass after Campbell police arrested him Wednesday. He is set to be arraigned on that charge Friday in Campbell Municipal Court.
