Jazz/R&B band at Stambaugh series
YOUNGSTOWN
The jazz-R&B ensemble Howard and the Point Five Band returns to the Bands at the Baugh series Thursday. The event begins at 6 p.m. in the garden at Stambaugh Auditorium, 1000 Fifth Ave. Admission is $10 (price includes one drink) at the door. Tickets also can be purchased in advance at stambaughauditorium.com. There will be a cash bar and food trucks at the event.
Welsh Society plans its annual picnic

St. David’s Welsh Society of Youngstown will host its annual picnic at 3:30 p.m. Aug. 20 at Stacey Pavilion in Austintown Township Park, 6000 Kirk Road.
The picnic will be catered and served in the air-conditioned pavilion. Cost is $17, and the public is invited. Entertainment will be provided by vocalists Ray and Jane Bartholomew.

Gyllenhaal to make Broadway return

Jake Gyllenhaal, who made his Broadway debut last year, will be returning to star in Lanford Wilson’s acclaimed play “Burn This.”
In “Burn This,” grief over the accidental drowning of a brilliant young dancer unites what would seem to be, at first glance, two totally opposite people. Performances begin February 2017.
Gyllenhaal, an academy award nominee for “Brokeback Mountain” and “Nightcrawler,” made his Broadway debut last year in “Constellations” with Ruth Wilson.
Sigourney Weaver gets wildlife award
INDIANAPOLIS
Actor Sigourney Weaver has been named the 2016 recipient of the Jane Alexander Global Wildlife Ambassador Award by the Indianapolis Zoo.
Weaver portrayed primatologist Dian Fossey in the 1988 movie “Gorillas in the Mist,” and is an honorary chairwoman of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International.
She also starred in “Gorillas Revisited” for BBC and Animal Planet in 2005.
