Scrappers romp to series victory

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers concluded their six-game road trip Tuesday with a 9-1 thumping of the Auburn Doubledays.

The Scrappers scored five runs in the first inning of the New York-Penn League game and captured their third straight series.

Gabriel Mejia started the game by tripling to right. With two outs, Erlin Cerda singled to score Mejia.

After Andrew Calica walked, Gavin Collins doubled for a 3-0 lead.

Emmanuel Tapia followed with an RBI single, forcing the Doubledays to go to the bullpen. Gian Paul Gonzalez greeted Auburn reliever Russell Harnening with a RBI double.

The Doubledays scored in the third inning on David Kerian’s homer. It was just the second earned run of the season allowed by Scrappers starter Triston McKenzie.

In the fifth inning, Calica tripled and scored on a wild pitch.

The Scrappers added two runs in the sixth inning, with Silento Sayles contributing a RBI triple. Calica homered an inning later.

McKenzie (3-2) earned the win in six innings of work. He allowed four hits, walked two and matched a career high with eight strikeouts.

Argenis Angulo and Ryan Perez closed out the game on the mound.

The Scrappers (12-20) return home to Eastwood Field to begin a six-game homestand on Thursday.
