YSU hires auditor
YOUNGSTOWN
Youngstown State University trustees Tuesday hired a full-time internal auditor.
Sarah Gampo of Atwater is to begin the job Aug. 8.
Her annual salary will be $76,000.
Gampo works as a senior auditor in the internal audit office at Kent State University.
YSU has outsourced internal audit functions since 2004.
Gampo will report to trustees.
YSU President Jim Tressel said most universities employ an internal auditor. The advantage is the person is on campus and available.
Grass-cutting fee
POLAND
Village council approved an amendment to the village zoning ordinance Tuesday evening.
The ordinance already imposed a fine of $100 on any property owner whose grass, brush, briars, burrs, thistles or weeds grow longer than 6 inches.
The amendment adds a fee of $100 per hour if the village is forced to cut the vegetation.
Brier Hill shooting
YOUNGSTOWN
The driver of a car was shot about 9:50 p.m. Tuesday at Dupont and Hammaker streets in the Brier Hill area.
It is believed the victim was taken to a local hospital.
Youngstown police were still at the scene at 11 p.m. and had not released the name of the victim, the seriousness of his injury, or the reason for the shooting.
Fair attendance
BAZETTA
The weather was hot and dry for the Trumbull County Fair, which ended Sunday. It led to a small decline in attendance – from 46,396 in 2015 to 44,618 this year.
Michelle Smith, Trumbull County Fair Board secretary, said that number does not include the number of people who attended on weeklong passes.
Thomas Sawyer, fair board president, said the heat on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday hurt attendance, but the dry weather and good turnout on Sunday helped.
Sunday’s attendance was 12,300, which is a nice increase over the 9,700 on the final day in 2015, Sawyer said.
One nice thing is that the fair went smoothly this year with very few controversies, illnesses or fights.
“It was just smooth,” Sawyer said. “This was a good year.”

Quick-changing scam
AUSTINTOWN
Authorities are looking for two men, one of whom reportedly stole $1,650 from Citizens Financial Bank by using a quick-changing scam.
At about 5 p.m. Monday, two township police officers responded to a report of a theft at Citizens Financial Bank on Mahoning Avenue that occurred last Friday.
The officers met with a female employee who said a man came up to her teller window and requested she exchange $3,000 in $20 bills with $50 bills, according to a police report.
The woman said the man then refused the $50 bills and asked for Canadian bills. When she said she didn’t have Canadian money and gave him back the $20 bills, the man only returned $1,350 of the $50 bills.
The woman said the man left in a vehicle with another man.
