Fleeing driver attempts to escape by climbing into local jail in California

VISTA, Calif.

Authorities say a man fleeing San Diego County deputy sheriffs made one big mistake – he tried to escape by climbing into jail.

The San Diego Union-Tribune says the chase began about 2 a.m. last Tuesday after a police officer in Oceanside tried to pull over a Nissan sedan for a minor traffic violation.

The car didn’t stop, and a chase began into nearby Vista, where sheriff’s deputies took over.

Authorities say the driver meandered through the city for nearly 20 minutes before pulling into the parking lot of the Vista Jail.

Authorities say the driver got out, ran and climbed over a fence into the area where prisoners are taken for booking.

And that’s just what happened. The 35-year-old man was arrested and booked for resisting and obstructing police.

91-year-old in trouble over avant-garde crossword

BERLIN

A 91-year-old woman is in trouble with a German museum after taking an art work depicting part of a crossword too literally.

“Reading-work-piece,” from 1965, was created by avant-garde artist Arthur Koepcke. It features the phrase “Insert Words” and was displayed at Nuremberg’s Neues Museum.

Museum spokesman Eva Martin on Thursday confirmed local media reports that the woman filled in blank spaces with a ballpoint pen, news agency DPA reported. She was visiting with a group of senior citizens.

Martin said museum officials believe the work can be restored. Museum chief Eva-Christina Kraus filed a criminal complaint, saying the case had to be reported for insurance reasons though there was no malicious intent. Police said the woman is being investigated for damage to property.

Man covers face with toilet paper, robs Nashville store

NASHVILLE, Tenn.

Police in Tennessee are looking for a man who they say robbed a Nashville gas station while covering his face with toilet paper.

WSMV-TV reports that the man entered a Twice Daily gas station just before 2 a.m. Wednesday.

He went into the bathroom, grabbed toilet paper and used it to cover his face as he pulled out a gun and demanded money from the clerk. No other customers were at the gas station at the time of the robbery.

Police are reviewing the store’s surveillance video, hoping to get a frame of the man’s face before he covered it with the toilet paper.
