Paper-contest winner

The ASM International Board of Trustees has named Janet L. Gbur of Canfield, a doctoral candidate in the department of materials science and engineering at Case Western Reserve University, as the winner of the 2016 ASM International Student Paper Contest for her entry “Fatigue and Fracture of Wires and Cables for Biomedical Applications.”

The awards program recognizes achievements of members of the materials science and engineering community. Awards will be presented at a Materials Science Technology 2016 event in October in Salt Lake City.

The ASM International Student Paper Contest award recognizes the best technical paper with a graduate or undergraduate student as first author that is published in an ASM-sponsored publication during the year.

Lawyers

Capital law graduate

Zac Bierdeman graduated in late spring from Capital University Law School in Columbus with his juris doctor degree.

He graduated from South Range High School in North Lima in 2007 and from Youngstown State University with a degree in political science. He was on the dean’s list at YSU and Capital Law School. Bierdeman works for Manring and Farrell law firm in Columbus, where he also lives.

He is the son of Tom and Debbie Bierdeman of Poland, and his brothers are Ryan and Brandan Bierdeman. His grandparents are Paul and Carole Gatchell of Poland and the late John and Sallie Bierdeman of Boardman.

DOCTORS

Earns medical degree

Alan Joseph Podolsky of Canfield, son of Dr. David and Denise Podolsky of Canfield, has received his doctor of osteopathic medicine degree from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Dr. Podolsky is a 2008 graduate of Canfield High School and graduated summa cum laude from Youngstown State University in 2012 with his bachelor’s degree in biology.

He will serve his osteopathic traditional rotating internship at University Hospitals Richmond Medical Center, followed by his residency in radiology at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.

DOCTORATE

Pharmacy graduate

Megan Caswell, daughter of Bob and Sharon Caswell of Boardman, recently earned a doctor of pharmacy degree from Northeast Ohio Medical University.

Caswell is a 2008 graduate of Boardman High School and graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in pharmaceutical sciences from the University of Toledo in 2012.

She will begin her PGY-1 pharmacy residency at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center in Cleveland.

Ph.D.

Lisa Haraburda Amerson of Cornelius, N.C., formerly of Youngstown, received a Ph.D. in education from Capella University in a ceremony in New Orleans.

Amerson’s dissertation was “One-to-One Laptop Programs: Do Students in Some Title 1 Schools Have an Advantage When High Stakes Tests are Computer-Based?”

She works as a professional development consultant for the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

A 1994 graduate of Ursuline High School, Amerson is the daughter of Martin and Nancy Haraburda of Youngstown.
