MGCY to host annual horticultural show

The Men’s Garden Club of Youngstown is announcing its 52nd annual Horticultural Show set for Aug. 20 and 21 at Fellows Riverside Gardens in Mill Creek Park, 123 McKinley Way. Participation is open to all who are interested in growing plants.

Entries must be received between 7 and 10:30 a.m. Aug. 20. Late entries will be displayed but not judged.

The public may view the entries from 1 to 5 p.m. Aug. 20 and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 21.

There are 14 sections for judging, A: vegetables; AA: ornamentals; B: fruits; C: annuals; D: perennials and biennials; E: dahlias; F: bulbs, tubers etc.; G: roses; H: potted plants; HH: bonsai; I: cacti; J: succulents; K: woody plants; and L: hanging plants.

Sectional awards will be given and will be determined by the judges from the blue ribbon winners.

Best of Show award will be determined by the judges from the sectional award winners. No points will be given for this award.

The sweepstakes award will be determined by totaling the number of blue ribbons of each entrant plus any sectional awards. Blue ribbons equal one point and sectional ribbons equal five points. In case of a tie, red ribbons will be counted.

The Presidential Award will be given to an adult who wins both the Best of Show and Sweepstakes awards.

The Larry Whetson Award, $25, will be given for the heaviest edible tomato, sponsored by Greier Ag Center.

Youth exhibitor requirements and entries, for those 16 and under, will be judged under the same rules. Sectional and Best of Show awards will be given.

The show committee is comprised of Rodney Toth, chairman; Donald Brown, cochairman; and Bruce Brungard, John Schinker, Dan Burns, Greg Fagnano, Bill Laslo and David Goist, committee members.

The judges for the 2016 show are Joseph Alessi Jr., John Schinker, Daniel Burns, Bill Slabe, Hugh Earnhart, Toth and Lynn Hoffman.
