Boardman Glenwood Middle School and Center Middle School had a combined band spring concert for the fifth-, sixth- and seventh-grade students on June 1 at the Boardman Performing Arts Center.

The concert was directed by Steven Chambers and Michael Shevock.

The concert was one of the last that Chambers directed, due to his retiring after 34 years as a music teacher at the end of the year.

“We have someone on the stage who has spent 32 of his years working with our band students, and some of you only got the pleasure of one year of that, and that is our very own Mr. Chambers,” Shevock told the audience.

The fifth-grade concert band was the first band to perform, followed by the sixth-grade then the seventh-grade concert bands.

Each of the bands performed six songs ranging from older, traditional songs to new and popular songs.

Director of Bands Tom Ruggieri and assistant director Tim Tuite attended the concert to help the performances run smoothly.

Tuite will be taking on more of a middle school band role once Chambers retires.

“I want to see the fifth-graders start from pretty much nothing and see them grow up and develop as musicians and people, that’s what I really want to do. It’s been my pleasure that I’ve done that,” said Chambers.
