Stocks are falling this afternoon after 5-day winning streak

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are falling in afternoon trading after a five-day winning streak that sent major indexes to record highs. Bond yields are climbing. Banks and consumer discretionary stocks are dropping the most.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 2 points, or less than 0.1 percent, to 18,504 at 2:30 p.m. Eastern time. The Standard & Poor's 500 index lost 4 points, or 0.2 percent, to 2,159. The Nasdaq composite fell 8 points, or 0.2 percent, to 5,026.

After the recent gains, "you have to be concerned. Are we going to see more slowing of the global economy?" said Bill Stone, chief investment officer at PNC Asset Management.

Herbalife rose $4.74, or 8 percent, to $64.10 after it agreed to pay a $200 million settlement over allegations that it deceived consumers, but avoided a more serious charge that it was operating as a pyramid scheme. The deal puts an end to a Federal Trade Commission investigation of the nutritional supplements company that had stretched over two years.

Wells Fargo fell $1.52, or 3 percent, to $47.43 after the consumer banking giant reported a drop in second-quarter earnings.

It isn't good, with companies in the S&P 500 expected to report earnings per share dropped 5.3 percent in the second quarter, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence. That would be the fourth quarter in a row of falling profits, nearly unheard of outside a recession.
