The Poland library was the site of a blood drive to benefit the American Red Cross on July 8.

Residents from Poland, as well as the surrounding areas, were able to donate blood if they wished, either on a walk in or by appointment basis.

Qualified residents were also offered the option to donate double red blood cells, which is accomplished by processing the blood through a machine that separates out the red blood cells from the plasma and white blood cells. Plasma and white blood cells are deposited back in the body while red blood cells are stored for donation.

The friendly and knowledgeable American Red Cross staff on hand made the donation process quick and almost painless. They talked donors through the process, calming fears and answering questions as they went. They also offered a snack and drink to any donor after the process was completed.

The Poland library hosts blood drives for the American Red Cross regularly, usually at least once per month and often more. Upcoming blood drives at this location include July 28 from 12:30-6:30 p.m., Aug. 11 from 12:30-6:30 p.m. and Aug. 19 from 10:30 a.m. until 3 p.m.
