US marshals arrest suspect in shooting

YOUNGSTOWN

The suspect in a shooting last week that left a man severely wounded was arrested Wednesday by U.S. marshals.

Chauncey Chandler, 33, no address listed, was arrested about 10:15 a.m. on East Philadelphia Avenue on the South Side.

Chandler is wanted in a shooting just before midnight July 5 that left a man badly wounded at Rush Boulevard and East Boston Avenue. Reports said the man was found lying in the street next to a cellphone and empty shell casings.

The man could not speak to investigators at first because of the severity of his injuries, but he is expected to recover, detectives said earlier this week.

A warrant was issued for Chandler on Tuesday on a charge of felonious assault. He was taken to the police department for questioning and booked into the Mahoning County jail.

Power lines down

SOUTHINGTON

A tractor-trailer hit power lines on U.S. Route 422, knocking them down and then continuing without stopping at 2:17 p.m. Wednesday, closing the road for about 45 minutes.

The lines came down on another tractor-trailer, causing minor damage to that vehicle but no injuries, said Trooper Dan Morrison of the Southington Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol. The incident occurred near the Trumbull-Portage county line.

Incidents probed in Boardman

BOARDMAN

Police are investigating separate incidents that involve a Tuesday burglary and breaking and entering Wednesday morning.

The burglary took place at an apartment on Oregon Trail in which the victims returned and found their door cracked open at 6 p.m. Tuesday. An Xbox gaming console and Michael Jordan basketball shoes were reported stolen. The victims placed the value of the stolen items at $400. The victims told police their door would sometimes fail to lock, and whoever entered might have known that. Police found no signs of forced entry.

The breaking and entering occurred at a residence on Chester Drive at 1 a.m. Wednesday. The victim told police he was entering his garage, which he shares with his neighbor, when he saw three men inside.

The resident confronted the men and drew his pistol. One man ran away on Market Street. The other two ran through backyards.

He described the men as black, 16 to 18 years old, all about 5 feet 10 inches tall and all wearing black clothing.

The city’s Design Review Committee approved exterior signs to be placed on The Vindicator building downtown.

The proposal, approved Wednesday by the committee, includes three signs: one identifying the newspaper and its address at 107 Vindicator Square on the side of the building facing Vindicator Square, a sign above its loading dock reading “The Vindicator,” and one identifying the public entrance to the building.

The latter two are on the front of the building on Front Street.
