Young people diverge on issues
Young people diverge on issues
WASHINGTON
Young people in America are united in saying education is the issue that matters most when it comes to picking a new president. But there’s a big split in what else will drive their votes.
For African-American adults between the ages of 18 and 30, racism is nearly as important as education. For young Hispanics, it’s immigration. And for whites and Asian-Americans in the millennial generation, it’s economic growth.
The results from a new GenForward poll highlight differences in a group of Americans often viewed as a monolithic group of voters
Convention cities adjust their plans for security
CLEVELAND
Rising tensions after the deadly ambush of police officers in Dallas have prompted officials in Cleveland and Philadelphia to adjust security plans for this month’s national political conventions.
Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams says his department has “ramped up” its security plans for the GOP convention and moved up by a week the activation of a tip line for reporting suspicious activity.
Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross says the fatal shooting of five Dallas police officers last week will require that police take a different tactical approach, although he would not elaborate.
The Republican National Convention begins Monday in Cleveland and the Democratic convention starts July 25.
Cops walk off game over Black Lives Matter jerseys
MINNEAPOLIS
A police union official says four off-duty Minneapolis officers working a WNBA game walked off the job at the city’s Target Center arena Saturday after Minnesota Lynx players wore pregame warm-up jerseys supporting the Black Lives Matter movement.
The shirts listed the names of Philando Castile and Alton Sterling, both fatally shot by police officers last week. Castile was killed by a police officer in suburban St. Paul during a traffic stop. The shirt also showed the Dallas police shield above the phrase “Black Lives Matter.”
Minneapolis Police Federation President Bob Kroll tells the Minneapolis Star-Tribune he commends the officers. He says they took their names off a list of officers to work future games.
South Korea set to disclose a site for US missile defense
SEOUL, South Korea
South Korea is set to announce a site Wednesday for an advanced U.S. missile defense system that it says is designed to cope with North Korean threats.
The planned announcement came two days after North Korea threatened to take unspecified “psychical” measures once the location for the Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense, or THAAD, is disclosed.
China and Russia also oppose the system that they believe help U.S. radars spot missiles in their countries. Seoul and Washington say the missile system only targets North Korea.
