German violin phenom to perform

Staff report

YOUNGSTOWN

Elias David Moncado, a 15-year-old violin phenom, will introduce himself to American audiences with a series of concerts, the first being Wednesday night at St. John Episcopal Church on Wick Avenue.

The concert is at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10.

Moncado, considered one of Europe’s top three young violinists, has won grand prizes in major competitions on that continent, including the famed Concors-Flame in Paris where he achieved the highest possible rating score, and the the International Young Paganini Competition.

He has been a featured performer with symphony orchestras in Berlin, Prague, Penang, Malaysia and Munich.

Moncado plays a rare and historic 1845 violin made by Nicholas Darche that was awarded to him by the German Foundation of Musical Life in 2014.

His visit to America is part of an exchange between Platin Scala orchestra of Wenden, Germany, and the New Castle (Pa.) Eintracht Maennerchor. St. John Episcopal Church and WYSU-FM are partnering to host the Youngstown concert.

Moncado will be accompanied by his parents Bernard and Mooi Jieu Moncado, both pianists.
