Motorists will have a smoother ride on more than 21/2 miles of state Route 18 in Hermitage and Shenango Township, Mercer County, through a project scheduled to begin Monday, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has announced.
The project, expected to be completed by Sept. 12, will resurface and improve Route 18 from a point north of Interstate 80 in Shenango Township to the area of Morefield Road in Hermitage.
Work will include milling and paving, along with updated drainage, curb ramps, guiderails and pedestrian push buttons on traffic signals.
Sharon Paving & Construction Co. of Sharpsville is doing the work for $1,597,772, which is to be paid entirely with state funds. No detours are anticipated, but motorists will encounter traffic lane restrictions controlled by flaggers.
Woman reports bullet in KoolAid

A Youngstown woman called police shortly before 11 p.m. Friday to report that a bullet might have come into her home.
A police report states the woman told officers she heard a loud pop between 7 and 8 p.m. and went into her kitchen to see if something fell off her counter. She found a hole in her wall and a single round in a pitcher of KoolAid that she had left on the shelf.
Police found a hole in the home’s drywall and exterior wall and recovered the ammunition.
Child struck during assault, chase
YOUNGSTOWN
Police are investigating an alleged assault involving a discharged gun. A resident reported two brothers physically assaulted him after an argument on Gaither Avenue on Friday night. The man said he left the scene of the altercation in his car only to be followed by the brothers in another car. They stopped him at gunpoint near Pasadena Avenue and Erie Street, he said. One of the brothers tried to assault the victim’s friend, who was in the back seat along with a 1-year old child, who was struck, he added. The report does not indicate who struck the child.
The victim said the brothers also fired a single round into the air toward his car before fleeing. The incident remains under investigation.
