Larry Brown resigns from SMU as coach

DALLAS

Larry Brown says he is resigning as SMU’s basketball coach, ending a four-year run during which the Mustangs made the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1993 and then were banned from postseason play last season.

The 75-year-old coach told ESPN that he was resigning, but didn’t say why. CBS Sports was the first to report the decision, citing unidentified sources.

Brown didn’t immediately return a message left on his cellphone by The Associated Press. There was also no response from SMU officials.

Brown had one season left on his contract. He was suspended for the first nine games last season for NCAA violations that also prevented the Mustangs from going to their second consecutive NCAA Tournament.

No charges for McCoy in Philadelphia brawl

PHILADELPHIA

The Pennsylvania attorney general’s office has dismissed its investigation of a fight involving Buffalo Bills running back LeSean McCoy in a Philadelphia nightclub that left two off-duty police officers injured.

Solicitor General Bruce Castor said in April that he decided to review the case after getting a request from the president of the police union in Philadelphia. District Attorney Seth Williams had earlier said he wouldn’t charge McCoy. He said he couldn’t prove who initiated the fight.

U.S. could face Mexico in qualifying final

MIAMI

The United States could open the final round of CONCACAF qualifying for the 2018 World Cup against Mexico.

The Americans currently are second behind Trinidad and Tobago in Group C semifinals with two matches remaining. The top two teams advance to the six-nation finals, from which three teams automatically make the field for the World Cup in Russia.

Mexico is the only CONCACAF country to have clinched a spot in the regional finals. If the Americans win Group C, they will host their archrival to begin the final round.

Should the United States finish second in Group C, it would take on the winner of Group B, also in a home match, to start the finals.

The U.S. has semifinal matches remaining at St. Vincent and the Grenadines on Sept. 2, then against Trinidad and Tobago at Jacksonville, Florida on Sept. 6.
