OVI checkpoints today, Sunday

CANFIELD

The Mahoning County OVI Task Force, in conjunction with the Ohio State Highway Patrol, is conducting two separate OVI checkpoints today and Sunday. Officers will be conducting roadside checks of drivers at the two locations for alcohol and drug impairment. Details of specific times and locations will be announced later.

In addition, police officers from participating agencies of the Mahoning County OVI Task Force will be conducting saturation patrols in various parts of the county throughout the weekend.

Handel’s ice cream has $1 cones today

Participating Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream and Yogurt locations will have cones for $1 to celebrate customers all day today.

Water advisory at Mosquito Lake

CORTLAND

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources has issued a water-contamination advisory for Mosquito Lake beach.

The warning resulted from samples collected Wednesday showing elevated levels of E. coli bacteria.

The beach will remain open during the advisory, though officials have placed warning signs near the water, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner 21 WFMJ-TV reports. WFMJ reports healthy adults will be allowed to swim during the advisory, though children, the elderly and the those with weakened immune systems will be prohibited from swimming.

ODNR takes samples to monitor the lake once a week during the May through September swimming season. Mosquito Lake was last under contamination advisory during May and June of 2015, according to the ODNR website.

2 face drug charges

CAMPBELL

Two people face charges including drug trafficking after a traffic stop shortly before 9 a.m. Friday.

An officer stopped a car driven by Brian Kana, 21, of Youngstown near Gladstone and Lettie avenues for objects obstructing the front windshield and the lack of registration sticker. Police reported searching the car due to a “strong odor of fresh marijuana” and finding about 17 grams of suspected marijuana, some of it in individually wrapped bags, along with about 2 grams of suspected crack cocaine, also in individually wrapped bags.

Along with traffic citations, Kana faces two felony drug-trafficking charges and a possession-of-drug-paraphernalia charge. The vehicle’s passenger, Phillip Crawford, 38, of Youngstown, also faces two trafficking charges and a possession charge.

Outdoor Teen Camp at Villa Maria center

VILLA MARIA, Pa.

The Villa Maria Education and Spirituality Center is hosting this year’s Outdoor Teen Camp.

Youths age 10 to 16 will learn and use outdoor skills at the 2016 Outdoor Teen Camp, starting Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The activities and skills the campers will learn include fire building and campfire cooking, hiking and using a compass, first aid, building a shelter and swimming. The registration fee for the camp is $10 with an additional $45 for the camp fee.
