Historical society to feature businesses
SALEM
This year the Salem Historical Society is featuring an exhibit “Salem Downtown Businesses Then and Now” from 1 to 4 p.m. Sundays at the museum, 208 S. Broadway.
Persons familiar with the history of these stores will be present and David Schwartz, whose father operated the Schwartz’s Department Store, and Mary Votaw, a long-time employee of J.C. Penney, will be available from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday. They will be interested to hear any stories visitors may have of their memories of downtown Salem.
Businesses prominent in the 1950s and ‘60s such as McCulloch’s Department Store, Moffett’s Men’s Wear, Schwartz’s Department Store, Hansell’s Lady’s Wear, Isaly’s Dairy Store, Strouss, Sears-Roebuck, Haldi’s Shoe Store, Cheshire Book Store or Daniel Smith Jewelry are a few of those featured.
For information call the society at 330-337-8514.
