About a month ago, Krish Mohip and Tyrone Olverson were competing for the same job.

Now, they’re working together.

Both men were finalists for the city schools chief executive officer job. The academic distress commission selected Mohip, from Chicago, and he started in the position last week.

Olverson, former superintendent of Finneytown schools near Cincinnati, is working as a consultant. He’s being paid $525 per day, for up to 15 days.

“There’s so much work that needs to be done,” Mohip said. Olverson “has a strong background in academics.”

Because he was a finalist for the CEO post, Olverson already has been vetted by the academic distress commission, the CEO noted.

Olverson’s focus is in helping Mohip learn more about the district’s central office and how it supports students, teachers and parents.

Mohip expects some changes in the central office structure. The central office is home to the superintendent, assistant superintendent, executive director of teaching, treasurer and learning and several other administrators.

“He’ll identify where there are redundancies” as well as where some people are doing multiple jobs resulting in not being as effective as they should be,” he said.

Central office restructuring could mean fewer people in one area and more in another, Mohip said.

It’s possible that Mohip may decide to hire Olverson as a district employee, he said.

“He’s been a great asset so far,” he said.

The turnaround on Olverson’s report to Mohip will be quick.

“I’m trying to get this finalized in the next week or two,” the CEO said.

The law that called for the appointment of a CEO puts Mohip on a tight time table. He has 90 days from his appointment to submit a plan for district improvement to the academic distress commission.
