Families, friends, students, community members and art lovers attended the 2016 Canfield Local Schools Student Art Show, which highlighted works of art from C.H. Campbell Elementary School, Hilltop Elementary School, Canfield Village Middle School and Canfield High School students, at the high school gymnasium on May 25-26.
Several hundred pieces of art were displayed from high school art students alone. Senior art students created their own display booths and chose which pieces of art from their classes they wanted to showcase.
The art students used several mediums to create their pieces, including computer graphics, 3-D sculptures, digital imaging, movies, pencil drawings and oil on canvas.
Each piece of the high school students’ art was entered into the judging. Medals were awarded to the top 60 award winners, with trophies going to the top 10 winners.
The top 10 included: best of show, Natalie Brown; first runner up, KayLee Whistler; second runner up, Kristen Hood; third runner up, Smaranda Soloman; fourth runner up, Frankie Santon; fifth runner up, Mackenzie Yozwiak; sixth runner up, Nick Palermo; seventh runner up, Lindsey Green; eighth runner up, Alexis Hudock and ninth runner up, Macey Malinkey.
Judging the art show was Dr. Lillian Lewis, assistant professor of art education in the Department of Art at Youngtown State University and Dr. William Young, Trumbull County Educational Service Center fine arts supervisor and Scholastic Art regional coordinator.
Kathryn Antal and Kevin Hoopes are the Canfield High School fine art teachers, and Pete Graff is the computer graphics instructor. Nancy Hulea and Heidi Garwing serve as art teachers at CVMS and Diane Leonard is the elementary art teacher at both Hilltop Elementary and C.H. Campbell Elementary.
Best of show winner Brown, a junior, won with her self portrait oil painting assigned in her Advanced Art class taught by Hoopes.
“I was pretty surprised I won Best of Show. Art is kind of a hobby for me. I like to be creative and make sculptures, too. I really enjoy Mr. Hoopes as an art teacher and he inspires us all,” Brown said.
First runner up Whistler placed with her pastel still life “Road Kill” assigned in her Advanced Art class taught by Hoopes.
“The name of my piece is meant to portray the hazards of life and traveling on the road and reminding people to watch their speed. It is a direct observation. I want people to look at it and feel it,” Whistler said.
Whistler’s piece also won a Gold Key in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards and placed first in pastels at the Mahoning County Schools Annual Art Show.
“Art is an excelling point for me. I am hoping to attend art school when I graduate and feel I could teach art and help people with their art. I would like to say thank you to my wonderful art teacher, Mr. Hoopes, and my wonderful family and friends for their support,” Whistler said.
Teachers Hoopes and Antal are very proud of their students.
“They are such good kids, It is a real privilege to work with them everyday,” Hoopes said.
The art show brought together several types of art, including wood tech, engineering graphics and family and consumer science.
The Canfield High School Jazz Band, under the direction of Mike Kelly, performed during the art show.
