A Mahoning County jail inmate may be facing an attempted murder charge after being accused of trying to hang a sheriff’s deputy with a makeshift noose made from a T-shirt this morning, Sheriff Jerry Greene said.

The sheriff said he was unsure if the 10:15 a.m. incident was related to, or inspired by, the Thursday evening mass murder of Dallas police officers. He said deputies will consult with prosecutors to determine what charge or charges will be filed.

The inmate who attacked the deputy is Lucky Mitchell, 33, who was brought to the jail after being arrested by Youngstown police on a carrying a concealed weapon charge June 25.

Mitchell was out of his cell in the open day area of the discipline pod, where he was housed, when he asked a deputy for a roll of toilet paper and the deputy opened his office door.

Mitchell then entered the deputy’s work area and asked the deputy to find his next court date on a computer.

Mitchell pulled from the bottom of his shirt a torn T shirt tied in a circle and attempted to place it over the deputy’s throat and choke the deputy, the sheriff’s report said.

A struggle ensued between Mitchell and the deputy, and two other inmates came to the deputy’s aid.

The deputy, believed to have suffered a bump on his head, was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital for evaluation.
