Lowellville Day set for Saturday
LOWELLVILLE
A Lowellville Day celebration is set for Saturday. A parade will begin at 12:30 p.m. and travel to the gazebo. After the parade, the Lowellville American Legion Post 47 will offer a laying-of-the-roses ceremony, 21-gun salute and the playing of Taps downtown. Mayor James Iudiciani will give the invocation, and a resolution will be presented to Bill Meehan for 41 years of service. A person of the year will be recognized, and awards for parade participants and floats will be presented.
There will be music, games, hayrides and pony rides, hourly drawings for door prizes and a final drawing at 7 p.m. for a year of free garbage collection and a TV.
Food will be available for purchase. A duck derby presented by the Lowellville Police Department will take place at 4 p.m., and a battle of the bands at 6 between The Locals and Highland Rose. The event ends at 8 p.m. Event chairman is Don Donofrio, 330-540-2415.
Child molestation reported at park
YOUNGSTOWN
Police are investigating a claim that a child was molested at a city-run camp earlier this week.
Lt. Ramon Cox, head of the department’s Family Services Unit, would only say that the complaint was filed for an incident Tuesday and that officers in the unit are investigating.
The camp is being run by the park department at Wick Park, Cox said.
New official
POLAND
Village council has appointed Tim Clavin as its new zoning administrator. Clavin, who already works as a full-time employee at the village street department, will earn a salary of $9,500 per year as administrator.
In other business, the council approved the board of zoning’s approval of the Yellow Creek Pavilion to stay within 120 feet of Yellow Creek. Ron Eiselstein, owner of the Village Pantry in Poland, built the pavilion for the Yellow Creek Theater. Poland’s zoning laws prohibits structures built within 120 feet of a body of water.
Road closing
YOUNGSTOWN
Wellington Avenue between Interstate 680 and Belle Vista Avenue will be closed to traffic starting Monday for a road paving project. The road will be closed for 30 days, though local access to residential driveways will be maintained.
Traffic will be detoured to Steel Street and Mahoning Avenue.
Drug charges filed
BOARDMAN
A Columbus resident was charged with drug abuse Thursday morning after a traffic stop.
Police stopped a silver Chrysler 300 on Southern Boulevard at Lucy Street after a registration check revealed the driver, Ramon Taylor, 47, of Elaine Road, had a suspended license.
Due to Taylor reportedly seeming nervous, sweaty and admitting possession of an open alcohol container, police searched his vehicle, finding a crack pipe and crack cocaine. He also was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.
Coffee/conversation event scheduled
YOUNGSTOWN
Youngstown Councilwoman Anita Davis, D-6th, will host a “Coffee and Conversation” event from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Flambeau’s Dinner Club, 2308 Market St.
Davis will provide complimentary coffee and doughnuts, discuss updates on trash collection fee legislation, loitering legislation and house demolitions, and answer questions from guests.
