INDIANS NOTEBOOK More from Thursday’s game at Progressive Field
All-Star audition: Indians righthander Corey Kluber (8-8, 3.79 earned-run average) will start tonight’s game against the Yankees. He’ll face New York’s Chad Green (1-1, 4.09). Thursday, Kluber was named to the American League All-Star team as a replacement for injured Toronto pitcher Marco Estrada. The other Indians going to San Diego are shortstop Francisco Lindor and righthander Danny Salazar. How well Kluber does tonight could influence AL manager Ned Yost (Royals) on whether he gets into Tuesday’s All-Star Game. It’s the first All-Star Game for Lindor, Salazar and Lindor. “To be able to experience one first-hand will be a pretty cool experience,” Kluber told MLB.com.
Old and new: On Saturday, Salazar (10-3, 2.36) will start against the Yankees’ CC Sabathia 95-6, 3.48). Sabathia started his career with the indians (2001-08) and won the Cy Young Award in 2007.
Futures Game: Three players in the Indians’ system will participate in Sunday’s Futures Game in San Diego. Columbus infielder Yandy Diaz, Lynchburg catcher Francisco Mejia and Akron outfielder Clint Frazier will play for Team USA.
Roster moves: Before Thursday’s game, the Indians placed right-hander Zach McAllister (2-2, 5.40) on the 15-day disabled list and optioned righthander Mike Clevinger to Triple-A Columbus. McAllister is suffering from right hip discomfort. Right-handers Austin Adams and Joe Colon were recalled from Triple-A Columbus. Colon warmed up but did not enter Thursday’s 5-4 loss to the Yankees.
Homestand: The Indians are 2-2 on their current homestand. After this weekend’s games against New York, the Indians won’t play at Progressive Field until July 26 against the Washington Nationals. After the All-Star break, the Indians will play nine games at Minnesota, Kansas City and Baltimore while the Republican National Convention is staged next door at Quicken Loans Arena from July 18-21. The Indians have a 26-20 road record.
Comfort zone: Tyler Naquin said he’s feeling much more comfortable since he spent 17 games with the Columbus Clippers in May. “I’m starting to feel like I belong in [the lineup],” said Naquin whose three hits on Thursday included a home run.
