YOUNGSTOWN
A thunderstorm left about 1,100 customers in the Youngstown Area without power as of 11:30 p.m. Wednesday. A FirstEnergy representative said crews would work through the night, and estimated power would be restored by 7:30 a.m. today. The storm hit about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, causing damage primarily on Youngstown’s South Side. City police and fire officials redirected traffic due to fallen trees, flooding and darkened traffic lights.
Motorcyclist killed
BROOKFIELD
The Ohio State Highway Patrol says weather was a factor in a motorcycle crash that killed a Niles man Wednesday, the Vindicator’s broadcast partner 21 WFMJ-TV reports. Daniel Stevens, 49, died after losing control of his motorcycle at 9 p.m. on Sodom Hutchings Road. Police said both Stevens and his 12-year-old son were ejected from the motorcycle. The boy, who was wearing a helmet, was transported to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital for nonlife-threatening injuries.
Fire damages home
YOUNGSTOWN
A fire Wednesday morning at a 177 Wychwood Lane home caused $5,000 in damage. Crews were called at about 1:40 a.m. to the home and had to force open the front door and put out a fire in the living room, reports said. The fire started on the first floor and was contained there.
Fire at vacant house
YOUNGSTOWN
Fire reports said a vacant 408 Canton St. house burned to the ground Wednesday morning. Crews were called at about 1:50 a.m. by a neighbor who said the home next to his was on fire. When firefighters arrived, the flames were so intense they used a ladder truck to protect neighboring homes while other firefighters worked to put out the blaze. Two homes sustained heat and smoke damage. Loss is listed at $5,200.
