Historical archives will be the topic
LIBERTY
The Ethnic Heritage Society Archive will be the topic of a lecture by local author/historian Tom Welsh at 10 a.m. Saturday at Kravitz’s Deli Meeting Room, 3135 Belmont Ave.
The program, sponsored by the McGuffey Historical Society, is free to the public. An offering will be accepted to benefit the society. Reservations are recommended; call Richard S. Scarsella at 330-726-8277. Walk-ins will be admitted if seats are available.
The archive, a collection of artifacts housed at Mahoning Valley Historical Society’s Tyler Center in Youngstown, includes photographs, textiles, textbooks, statuary, recordings, and interview transcripts.
Highlights include a 1918 memorandum to President Woodrow Wilson that was signed by members of the Croatian American Council of Youngstown, a statue of St. Nicholas that stood on the altar of St. Casmir’s Polish Catholic Church between 1926 and 1955, and a 1933 broadside announcing the third annual Ukrainian Day at Youngstown’s Idora Park.
Scottish fiddler concerts planned
NEW WILMINGTON, PA.
As part of the Strathgheny School of Scottish Fiddling camp, Westminster College will host two free Scottish fiddler concerts. Attendees should bring a lawn chair.
At 8 p.m. July 11 in Anderson Amphitheater, professional fiddlers Melinda Crawford Perttu, assistant professor of music at Westminster, and David Gardner, will perform. They will be accompanied on Scottish piano by Daniel Perttu, associate professor and chair of Westminster’s School of Music.
At 8 p.m. July 15, on Weisel Senior Terrace outside of Old Main, student camp participants will perform their weeklong accumulation of music. The concert is part of the Summerfest celebration of the arts festival from 3 to 9 p.m. in New Wilmington.
Crawford Perttu is a U.S. National Scottish fiddling champion. She earned an undergraduate degree from Duquesne University and master’s degree and doctorate from Ohio State University.
Gardner is a professional fiddler for the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation and a Fulbright teacher exchange scholar in music.
