Drunken driver kills officer at traffic stop
STERLINGTON, La.
Louisiana State Police say a drunken driver plowed into a police car at a traffic stop in northeast Louisiana, killing one officer and injuring two others.
The wreck occurred early Sunday on Interstate 55 in the Ouachita Parish town of Sterlington, about 220 miles northwest of New Orleans.
Trooper Michael Reichardt said in a news release that Sterlington Officer David Elahi was standing behind his car, interviewing someone who had been stopped, when an SUV hit him and his car.
Reichardt says 44-year-old Tracy Govan of Monroe was arrested on charges including vehicular homicide and vehicular negligent injury – killing or injuring someone by driving while drunk.
Reichardt said in an email that the other two officers had minor injuries.
Dad: 2 gators were involved in attack
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla.
The father of a toddler killed by an alligator at Disney World last month told rescue officials two alligators were involved in the attack.
According to emails from the Reedy Creek Fire Department, Matt Graves said he was attacked by a second alligator as he tried to reach his son after the boy was pulled into the water outside Disney’s upscale Grand Floridian Resort.
Capt. Tom Wellons described his interaction with the Nebraska father in emails to his supervisors obtained by The Orlando Sentinel. He said the family kept showing rescuers pictures of the boy.
Five alligators were killed shortly after the incident. The boy’s body was discovered intact about 15 yards from shore, 6 feet underwater
Kuwait detains IS suspects, foils attack
KUWAIT CITY
Kuwait’s Interior Ministry says police have arrested five Islamic State suspects, including an 18-year-old Kuwaiti man planning to attack a Shiite mosque in the final days of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, which ends this week.
The man purportedly confessed to plotting the attack, and had planned to deploy a suicide vest. An IS attack against a Shiite mosque in Kuwait in June last year killed at least 27 people.
Additionally, police detained a 52-year-old mother and her son accused of helping IS fighters in Syria, where the group holds territory.
Police say they also detained two other Kuwaitis in possession of assault rifles and the black IS flag.
The Interior Ministry statement, published overnight Monday, did not say when the arrests took place.
