In a small room in the back of Struthers Public Library, children and parents got to get a little messy while creating tie-dye art.

Five-year-old Henry Hawkins said he loved the concept of being able to use paint and his hands.

The kids chose various shapes of paper and colors of paint, placed them on a machine that spins and added paint as the paper spun around and around.

The whirling motion would spread out the dots of color each artist dropped onto the paper, creating a different look for each artist.

Henry’s sister, Emily Hawkins, 9, said she liked figuring out which colors

looked best together for her finished products.

“It’s really fun and when it comes out, it has a splattery look to it,” she said.

Rob Gelonese, Struthers Middle School principal, said he was amazed at the art his sons, Robbie, 8, and Adrian, 7, were making.

Gelonese was making an effort to keep up with the library’s summer programs this year.

“It gives them opportunities to experience things they might not have experienced,” he said.

Adrian said not only does he enjoy spin art, but he also enjoys coming to the library in general.

“You get to make and do a lot of cool stuff,” he said.

Gelonese said he tries to bring his children to as many library events as possible.

Lana Ilain agreed and said she loves bringing her children to the library, at 95 Poland Ave., for a chance to try new things in a place she trusts. She appreciates the free programs the library provides, she said, calling them a “blessing.”

“It’s a safe place, and the activities are also educational and for the whole family,” she added.
