Boardman Lanes got a visit from the fourth-grade students from Robinwood Lane Elementary and a class of second-graders from Stadium Drive Elementary on May 25.

Jan Zorman’s fourth-grade class and Debbie Seifert’s second-grade class have been pen pals for a while, exchanging weekly letters. The students would pick a topic they wanted to write about and learned about each other through their writing.

“Writing back and forth to someone is really cool because you’re writing with the person and you get to see what they like to say to you. It’s fun to see how they write because they’re younger than us,” said Savanna Watkins, a student in Zorman’s class.

“I’m the only one who had two pen pals. It was kind of hard and sometimes my teacher forgot, she always asked me what was taking so long,” said Alivia Shablesky.

One of the favorite letter assignments dealt with the book and movie “Mr. Popper’s Penguins.” The fourth-grade students took a picture of themselves and put it on a penguin’s body for the second-grade students to see what they look like.

“When we wrote about what we did with ‘Mr. Popper’s Penguins,’ we had to send them a picture of us for them to see what we look like. They had to send us one back with their faces to see what they look like,” said Adam Konnerth, a student in Zorman’s class.

“I think it’s fun writing to them because you get to know them,” said Tristyn Gilmer, a fourth-grader.

After writing to each other for several weeks, the students had the opportunity to meet each other for the first time while going on a bowling trip.

Jeff Hammerton and Jeanette Tamulonis’ fourth-grade classes joined Zorman and Seifert on the bowling trip. The students got the chance to bowl in the dark when the black lights came on and different colored lights shined all throughout the alley.

When the students finished bowling, they had pizza and cookies before they went back to school. Once Zorman’s class got back to school, they continued their pen pal writing with a letter about what they did at the bowling alley and what their favorite part was.
