Bake sale, benefit will support rescue

Legacy Dog Rescue will sponsor a Valentine Treat Sale from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Family Video, 4385 Kirk Road.
There will be Valentine-themed cookies, cupcakes and dog treats.
After the sale, there will be Dogs 4 Dogs Benefit from 4 to 8 p.m. at Open Hearth Grill, 207 Steel St., Youngstown.
There will be a basket auction, 50-50 drawing and a raffle for dinner for two at Michael Alberini’s with Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini. A portion of the food sales will be donated to the rescue. The winner does not need to be present.
Proceeds from both events will help Legacy Dog Rescue, a local nonprofit group, save dogs that have been abandoned, abused or neglected, and place them into loving homes.

Paint and Dip event at New Hope UMC

New Hope United Methodist Church, 21 Fairview Ave., will host a Paint and Dip fundraiser at 5 p.m. Saturday.
The cost is $25 per person.
An instructor will guide participants in painting a canvas; all materials will be provided.
There will be a basket raffle, and appetizers will be served.

Speight will be speaker at Black History event
NEW CASTLE, PA.
Retired educator S. Jean Speight will be the featured speaker during a Black History Month program at 7 p.m. Feb. 10 at the Joseph A. Clavelli History Center of the Lawrence County Historical Society, 408 N. Jefferson St.
Speight will share her knowledge of African-American women like Fannie Lou Hamer, an American voting rights activist and civil rights leader; journalist Charlayne Hunter-Gault, one of the first two African-Americans accepted at the University of Georgia; and Barbara Jordan, the first African-American elected to the Texas Senate and first black female elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.

Ulster Project to host Feb. 14 wine taste
CANFIELD
The Mahoning Valley Ulster Project will host its annual wine taste from 2 to 5 p.m. Feb. 14 at Drake’s Landing, 2177 W. Western Reserve Road.
Tickets are $30 per person or $50 per couple, and will include a wine and beer taste, light appetizers, basket auction, 50-50 raffle and giveaways. No tickets will be sold at the door. Call 330-565-2900 to purchase.
The Mahoning Valley Ulster project is a summer exchange program that brings together teen leaders from Northern Ireland and the United States, offering spiritual, social and service opportunities to help the students discover the common ground despite religious differences.
Historical Society to host ‘This Old Hat’
STRUTHERS
Patty Carver will star in the musical, “This Old Hat,” at 1 p.m. Feb. 21 at Struthers Parkside Church, 110 Poland Ave.
The historically correct musical production explores the lives of women who played important roles in American history.
The event is hosted by Struthers Historical Society and supported by Struthers Fallen Soldier Project.
Patricia Beach, author of a series of books on Struthers history, will be available to sign books.
Tickets are $15. There is limited seating and advanced sales only.
Spring Extravaganza will support students
LEETONIA
Leetonia’s Spring Extravaganza will be from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. March 11 in the cafetorium at Leetonia High School, 450 Walnut St.
The event is a fundraiser for the students of the high school and their Envirothon, NOSB, Academic Challenge, Spanish Club and the principal’s fund.
There will be local vendors and crafters, a basket auction and quarter auction.
Organizers are seeking local sales consultants, craft vendors and entrepreneurs to participate; nonrefundable table fees include an early bird table reservation for $25, or $30 per table if reserved after Feb. 19.

Learn to make Israeli salads with JCC
YOUNGSTOWN
Jewish Community Center, 505 Gypsy Lane, will host a class on making Israeli salads from 6 to 8 p.m. March 2 in the center’s multi-purpose room. Participants will learn how to make three traditional Israeli salads.
