Children gathered at the Poland library on Jan. 15 to learn some science and try a variety of different hands-on activities.

The Preschool Science event is part of a story time that Poland library hosts several times a month for different age groups.

“We are starting to try an evening story time a few times a month. We are going to try to have a different theme every month,” said librarian Amanda Kollar.

The children and their caregivers listened to Kollar read the book “Space Walk” by Salina Yoon before any of the activities started.

The book was about a space guide who walked the children around the planets and taught them something about each planet.

When the story was finished, Kollar started the different experiments she had to show everyone.

Experiments that Kollar demonstrated included a tornado made from glitter and water in a bottle and how you can see a rainbow in a bowl of milk.

Kollar finished showing the children a few experiments, and then she directed them to other experiments she had set up on the tables.

These experiments were designed to encourage the children to be hands on. There were magnets to play with among other smaller experiments.

Having a Preschool Science event gives the children an opportunity to come to the library and learn new things during story time.

It encourages hands on activities, rather than just listening to a book and coloring a picture.
