Sixth-grade student Alexis Ung was crowned the 2015 school champion of the annual Canfield Village Middle School Spelling Bee on Dec. 21.

Each grade level crowned a winner, with Grace Min named fifth-grade champion, Jacob Johnson named sixth-grade champion, Maggie Carrier named seventh-grade champion and Sydney Kinkade named eighth-grade champion. All grade level champions received a Barnes and Noble gift card, while Ung and Carrier also received an online subscription to Encyclopedia Britannica, furnished by Scripps.

Ung also earned a spot in, and will represent the district in, The Vindicator’s Spelling Bee at Youngstown State University on March 12, for the chance to move on to the Scripps National Bee in Washington, D.C.

The 42 student spellers qualified for the bee by winning a classroom spelling bee, with each homeroom class having a representative, along with one student from each individual Language Arts class and four winners from last year.

“Welcome and thank you for coming. We have 42 spellers on stage today and they have been preparing for about a month. I would like to thank them for their preparation and also thank their parents and families for joining us today and also helping them prepare,” said Erica Putro, spelling bee coordinator.

After three rounds, the number of spellers was whittled down to 12 and by round seven, the spelling bee was down to the final two spellers - Carrier and Ung. While the two spellers continued to battled it out, in round 10, words not seen prior to competition were introduced to the word list.

Ung ended the spelling bee in round 12 with the correct spelling of postprandial.

Spelling bee judges included Putro, Julie Webb, Michelle Napolitano, Melissa Nagy, Emily Sipe and Mary Lou Thacker. Assisting students on stage were Mike Kerensky and Vicki Latimer.
