Mahoning Valley Ulster Project hosts Wine Taste event

The Mahoning Valley Ulster Project is set to host its annual Wine Taste on Feb. 14 at Drake’s Landing in Canfield from 2-5 p.m. This is a major fundraiser for the Ulster Project. Tickets to the event are $30 per person or $50 per couple, and include a wine and beer taste, light appetizers, a Chinese auction, 50/50 raffle and giveaways. The Mahoning Valley Ulster project is a summer exchange program, which brings together teen leaders from Northern Ireland and the United States. The program offers spiritual, social and service opportunities to help the students discover the common ground they share despite religious differences. Each year, Valley families play host to more than a dozen Northern Irish teens for this enriching experience. MCCTC receives Advanced Career Pathways Grant

The Mahoning County Career and Technical Center has received the Advanced Career Pathways Grant For Clean Energy Technology for the 2016-17 school year. This grant is provided by the Ohio Department of Education and the Southern Regional Education Board’s High Schools That Work, supporting new career-tech programs relevant to the 21st century workplace. Each four-course Advanced Career pathway curriculum is rich with hands-on projects that stimulate students and help them understand the relationship between theory and application. Advanced Career combines college-ready core academic content with hands-on, project-based assignments centered on a defined career focus. The grant money will go towards new equipment, professional development for staff and Clean Energy Technology curriculum for the new ninth and tenth-grade STEM school opening in the 2016-17 school year.

Gathering Place event scheduled for Feb. 8

There will be a Gathering Place event at Lord of Life Church, located at 550 N. Broad St. in Canfield, on Feb. 8 at 11 a.m. There will be a presentation by Attourney Elizabeth Bernard, the topic of which is still to be announced. Lunch will be provided by The Woodlands. This is a free community outreach social program offered to all senior citizens, and it takes place on the second Monday of every month. Different games and activities are offered each month.

Mill Creek Champter of ABWA to meet

The Mill Creek Chapter of American Business Women’s Association will host its Feb. 2 meeting at A La Cart Catering in Canfield. The guest speaker will be Dr. Friedrich Koknat, Youngstown State University professor emeritus in chemistry, who will be narrating on Love Stamps as he is a representative of the Mahoning Valley Stamp Club. Networking begins at 6 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. Dinner will be creamed chicken on biscuits, roast beef, mashed potatoes, peas and carrots, salads, bread and butter and beverages and Valentine cream pastry for dessert. Local students named to the Dean’s List at Miami University

Miami University students who achieved a 3.5 or better grade point average for first semester 2015-2016 have been named to the dean’s list recognizing academic performance. Students from Canfield to earn this honor were Megahn O’Shaughnessy, Sarah Wyand, Rachel Wyand and Sibel Sarac.

Local Sstudents make the President’s List at Miami University

Miami University students who achieved a perfect 4.0 grade point average for first semester 2015-2016 have been named to the president’s list recognizing academic excellence. Students from Canfield to earn this distinction were Haley Allen and Catherine Brown.

Students named to Ashland University’s Fall 2015 Dean’s List

To be eligible for this honor, a student must be enrolled full time at Ashland University and achieve at least a 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale. Students from Canfield to achieve this distinction were Kelly Ranttila and Edmond Pilolli.

Canfield Lions Club welcomes guest speaker

Dr. Richard Lehrer recently was the guest speaker at the Canfield Lions Club. Lehrer is a Lion in the Jackson Township Club and also the Chair of District 13D Sight Conservation Committee. The topic was Early Detection and Screening in Preschool Children. The International Lions Program, KidSight USA, targets children between the ages of 6 months to 6-years. Screening may result in early detection with a referral for professional follow-up care. District 13D Lions have the use of a PlusOptix which helps screen these preschoolers. Lehrer demonstrated the ease of using this screening device. The Canfield Lions meet on the first and third Thursdays of the month at A La Cart Catering, located at 429 Lisbon St. in Canfield.

Kent State names Fall 2015 President’s List

Kent State recently recognized more than 950 undergraduate students who have been named to the President’s list for Fall 2015. Undergraduate students who obtain a 4.00 GPA while maintaining 15 or more credit hours during the fall qualify to receive this honor. Students from Canfield to receive this distinction were Angela Deibel, Elise Kogelnik, Erica Kotel, Luke Whittenberger, Molly Davidson, Michelle Pfeffer and Victoria Manenti.

Capital University announces President’s List honorees

Capital University recently announce its President’s List honorees for the fall 2015 semester. To be named to the President’s List, students must have achieved a grade point average of at least 3.85. The following area students were included on the President’s List for fall 2015: Mary Klacik and Cassidy Teminsky, both of Canfield.

The Bistro at MCCTC announces new winter and spring schedule

Student-operated restaurant, The Bistro at MCCTC, is open to the public Tuesdays-Thursdays from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. for dine in or carry out through the spring. The Bistro is run by students enrolled in the Culinary Arts Program at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center. This gives students the chance to gain experience in all facets of working in the restaurant industry, from working as kitchen staff, line cooks and the Sous Chef to waiting tables and hosting. The Bistro schedule is as follows: Feb. 9-11, 17, 18 and March 1-3, 8-10, 15-17.

Canfield High School to present Disney Spectacular!

The Choral Department of Canfield High School is busy with final preparations for its Disney Spectacular! on Jan. 30, Canfield High School will be transformed into a dinner tasting extravaganza. The dinner portion begins at 6 p.m. with a ‘Taste of Canfield,’ which includes a sampling from local restaurants such as Ange Netta’s, Inner Circle, Saadey’s Place, Chick-fil-A, A La Carte and more. At 7:30 p.m., the evening continues with a musical sampling of Disney favorites by the students of the Canfield High School Choirs. Tickets are currently on sale. Tasting and concert combination tickets are $20. Concert only tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. Griffin named to Provost’s List at Capital University for Fall 2015

Capital University recently announced Bridget Griffin, of Canfield, was named to the Provost’s List for the fall 2015 semester. To be named to the Provost’s List, full-time, degree-seeking students must have achieved a grade point average of at least 3.70.

Local residents named to University of Dayton Dean’s List

Local residents Joshua Bortmas, John Brown, Frank Rondinelli, Jennifer Rondinelli and Nicholas Dirienzo, all from Canfield, made the University of Dayton fall 2015 Dean’s List, which honors students achieving a minimum 3.5 GPA.

Blood drive

There will be a blood drive by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross to proudly serve the needs of St. Elizabeth Hospital on Feb. 19 from 10:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Canfield library. Taking blood donations to help the community. For appointments, call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Blood pressure check

There will be a free blood pressure check by Salem Area Visiting Nurse Association at the Canfield library from 1-2 p.m. on Feb. 16.

Lego my library

Meet at 6 p.m. on Feb. 24 and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Canfield library. Legos will be provided. This event is for children, age 6 and up.

Younstown Shrine Club to host annual fundraiser

On Jan. 30, the Youngstown Shrine Club will be hosting its annual Beer Taste. The event will include sampling of a variety of unique local and national brews, along with food, entertainment and fellowship. Wine and other beverages will also be served. Tickets are $35 in advance and $40 at the door. The public is welcome to attend and proceeds, in part, go to the Shriners Hospitals for Children. Business and individual sponsorship opportunities available for the event. In 2015 the Youngstown Shrine Club donated more than $33,000 to support the Shriners Hospitals for Children from its events throughout the year. Youngstown Soup event to fund community projects

Jan. 30 marks the date Youngstown Soup will be hosting a community micro-granting dinner celebrating and supporting creative projects in Mahoning County. With a donation of $5 attendees receive soup, salad, bread and a vote on some of the most innovative project proposals in Youngstown. There will be four presenters who will have four minutes to share their idea on their project proposal, which will help the community in some way. Attendees will have the chance to vote on their favorite soup, enjoy a 50/50 raffle and participate in a silent auction of donated goodies from the Valley’s finest businesses. At the end of the night the ballots are counted and the winner takes home the proceeds raised from the dinner to carry out their project. During the next event they will present to the community how they carried out their project. The event takes place at the Calvin Center, located at 755 Mahoning Avenue in Youngstown, on Jan. 30 from 6-9 p.m.

Victorian Players show rescheduled

The Victorian Players have announced the postponement of its scheduled January show, “Same Time Next Year.” The production is rescheduled for June 17-26. The Vic apologizes to its season ticket holders for any inconvenience this may cause. In the January slot, the Vic has contracted for a one-woman show performed by Carol Weakland, actress, author and storyteller. “A Date with the Bront ´ Sisters,” two one-woman shows based on “Jane Eyre” and “Wuthering Heights,” will be performed Jan. 23, 29 and 30 at 7:30 p.m. and Jan. 24 and 31 at 2 p.m. at the Victorian Players Theatre, located at 702 Mahoning Ave. in Youngstown. GA to meet

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting takes place every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another takes place every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.

‘I Love My New Canfield Library’ fundraising event

The Friends of PLYMC’s Canfield Committee will host an “I Love My New Canfield Library” fundraiser at A La Cart Catering, located at 429 Lisbon Street in Canfield on Feb. 11 at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 per person. This includes heavy hors d’oeuvres, chocolate desserts, raffle and cash bar. For information or ticket reservations, contact the Development Office at 330-740-6086. Healthy relationships and boundaries

Creating boundaries is a good way to keep your relationships healthy and secure, whether between a parent and their child, two parents, a parent and a teacher, a child and their friends or between significant others. This Now You Know talk on Feb. 18 at 6 p.m. at the Canfield library will examine the importance of these boundaries of all ages, how to establish them and the positive results of having them. This event is presented in partnership with Meridian HealthCare and the presenter will be Meghan Fortner, LPCC-S. Reservations are needed and can be made by calling 330-744-8636. Prepare your child for Kindergarten through play at the Canfield library on Feb. 12 at 10 a.m. They will read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for Kindergarten. This event is for children ages 2-6. All children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult.

Fun time for 4s and 5s

Join the Canfield library on Feb. 9 at 11:30 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult. This will be a holiday program.

Grab and go craft for February

Make a craft to take home during regular hours at the Canfield library throughout February. This event is for children of all ages.

Guess and go

Guess how many candy kisses are in the jar at the Canfield library during regular hours throughout February. The closest guess wins the jar. This event is for children of all ages.

Snowman social

If you like snowmen, then you will not want to miss this event on Feb. 17 at 6 p.m. at the Canfield library. Join the library for an evening of snowman-themed fun, including stories, snowman crafts, games and activities. This event is for all ages.

STEAM Saturday

Join the Canfield library on Feb. 20 at 11 a.m. for a fun program based on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics) learning. This event is for children in grades 4-6.

TAB meeting

Get to know the new Canfield library at the latest TAB (Teen Advisory Board) meeting at 4 p.m. on Feb. 25, take a look at new teen books and share ideas. Snacks will be provided. This event is for teens.

Teen Tuesdays

Have a snack and join your friends to do some fun activities at the Canfield library on Feb. 9 at 6 p.m. Topics will be different monthly.

Mason jar snow globes

Jar up the winter at the Canfield library on Feb. 27 at 3 p.m. with Mason Jar Snow Globes. The library will provide the trees and snow to make a tiny winter wonderland, no water necessary. This event is for adults and teens. You must register so they have supplies for everyone.

Nonfiction book club

If you think that “truth is stranger than fiction,” drop in on the Canfield library’s nonfiction book club on Feb. 8 at 6 p.m. Hear about what others are reading and share your story. The book you read is your choice. This event is for adults.

Canfield Friends of PLYMC women’s book discussion group

The Canfield Friends of PLYMC women’s book discussion will meet on Feb. 16 at 6:30 p.m. at the Canfield library. The group meets every third Tuesday of the month and is for adults.

Friends of PLYMC Canfield Friends Committee meeting

The Friends of PLYMC Canfield Friends Committee will meet on Feb. 10 at 6:30 p.m. at the Canfield library. Meetings take place on the second Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the multi-purpose room. This event is for adults.

Bonding with babies and books

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Canfield library every Thursday in February at 10 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Join the Canfield library every Tuesday in February at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader. Gotta Move story time

This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver. Join the Canfield library for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning every Wednesday in February at 10 a.m. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, and talk and play.
